What is Culture--Who makes the ultimate rules?

Just thought I'd share with you one of my most favorite youtube video ever.
When I'm down, I watch this and I don't help but smile...and who could hold it after seeing this!?

But from this, you really can see that the American culture is EVERYWHERE and with globalization, its become much accessible as well. But here's the question, who determined that the U.S was going to be the leader and that Hollywood is going to be producing and representing our culture? When in reality, what's shown on T.V and movies are hardly what our everyday lives look like in any sense.

So what is culture? It is made up and quickly changed according to what's 'in' and 'out' or is it authentic across nations, regions, ethnicity and etc?

  1. Interesting. I always considered my family's culture to be it's own little microcosim, that probably will always be different from others. At the same time I see us gravitating towards others of a similar cultural mix and this being the culture that I live in. Part of the "third culture" as my home culture.

  2. Culture is how we've assimilated our own thinking process to fit our environment. Hollywood culture is so dominant throughout the world especially with the powerful tool of media. That doesn't mean everyone thinks like an "American" just because they have a Mcdonalds and watch American movies. Culture seems to be what is most generally accepted by a group of people, whether it be ethnicity, racially, geographically etc. Even in the U.S, there are differences culturally between people in L.A, Salt Lake, New York, Honolulu, Anchorage to Dallas, all are so different in the way they live. I think it's only what makes you acceptable to the eyes of that community that make you part of their culture.

  3. "Culture" is maybe one of most spoken words on this campus. but it's so true that culture is not something that firmly defined. yet, culture is so powerful that it is a big part of individual and group identity.

im pretty sure that there could be a lot to say about culture. but one thin im really interested is that there are actually numerous ways to form culture.

it could be created by people, but then it could work vise-versa as well. also, once culture is distributed, it will become recreated again when people experience and interpret it. so, really interesting thing to think about.
